Black Spinel and Hematite Rectangle Silver or Gold Drop Earrings

£45.00
Description

If you like Gothic jewellery or are just wanting to match a little black dress, then these AAA grade Black Spinel earrings are made for you. Black Spinel is the blackest of black gemstones - they call it Zed black, as there's no other gemstone which is as black.

These fascinating, glittering black earrings come with an accent gemstone to match your mood/outfit/taste - this can be almost any gemstone/colour you like, but I regularly use Amethyst, Moonstone, Pearl, Hematite.

August Birthstone Spinel

AAA Spinel and Hematite

Length: 32mm total length, stones 14mm

Metal: Sterling Silver or 14 carat Gold Fill

Handmade in Cornwall

This style is available in other gemstones/colours.

A matching pendant is also available.

This is a handmade item.  While the gemstones have been selected to be as similar as possible, they are natural so no two are ever exactly alike. Each piece is therefore unique.

All my jewellery comes boxed, ready to give to someone else or treat yourself!

Spinel also has the highest refractive index of any gemstone which means that when the light passes through the stone it is split into a rainbow of colour.  This gives an incredible glitter to the stone, even though it's black, and some people can see the top end of the light spectrum too, seeing deep blues and purple in the blackness. To emphases the refracted light, the rectangles are cut into hundreds of tiny facets by expert gemstone cutters in Jaipur before being handmade into jewellery here in Cornwall.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, Spinels were the most prized stones, the glittering blackness being irresistible to monarchs like Henry VIII and Elizabeth I - there are many portraits showing them wearing outfits encrusted with black spinels.  If you couldn't afford black spinels, to imitate the spinel's light refraction + blackness, you used diamonds with the backs painted black!

I use the best quality materials I can, while keeping the price affordable. The vast majority of my gemstones are AAA grade sourced directly from a 3-generation family firm of gemstone cutters in Jaipur, India.

All the metals I use have been recycled.

Fine Silver – 99% Pure Silver. Nickel free. Hypo-allergenic

14 Carat Gold Filled - 100 x more gold than gold plate, so much more durable with an expected life span of 30-50 years before the gold wears through. Hypo-allergenic and nickel free.

Size Guide

Chain length
I offer a choice 16, 18 or 20 inch chains.  On an average adult women, a 16 inch will be close to the neck, a 18 inch sits comfortably below the collar bones, a 20 inch is just above the start of the cleavage. I sell 5x more 18 inch chains than the other two lengths put together.

Bracelet length
Most of my bracelets come with a 1 inch extender chain.

  • Small - 6 – 7 inch
  • Medium - 7 - 8 inch
  • Large – 8 – 9 inch

To measure your wrist use a flexible tape measure or wrap a piece of ribbon, around your wrist and measure that.  Then add between ½ inch – 1 inch, depending on how tight you like the bracelet to be.

Smaller or larger wrists?
I can make to any size, just ask.

Jewellery Care

To keep your jewellery looking nice for longer, keep away from chemicals such as chlorine and perfume, and if it gets wet, rinse with clear water and dry immediately.

Clean gently using a soft toothbrush, lukewarm water and a dash of Fairy washing up liquid, taking care to avoid the gemstones if possible. Tarnish can be removed using a silver cloth.
